Boyu WF-2015 Hang On Back Filter - 150L/h Waterfall Style HOB Filter for Nano Tanks
Boyu WF-2015 Hang On Back Filter - 150L/h Waterfall Style HOB Filter for Nano Tanks
The Boyu WF-2015 is the smallest and most compact hang-on-back filter in the Boyu WF series, engineered specifically for ultra-nano and small betta aquariums. This ultra-low-power waterfall-style filter delivers effective 3-layer biochemical filtration in a minimalist design—perfect for desk aquariums, betta tanks, and aquascapes under 30 liters requiring whisper-quiet, space-saving filtration.
Key Benefits:
- Perfect Flow Rate for Nano Tanks (150L/h): Delivers 1-2 complete water turnovers per hour for tanks 15-25 liters—ideal for delicate nano setups without excessive water movement
- 3-Layer Filtration System: Multi-stage mechanical, chemical, and biochemical filtration removes debris and impurities while cultivating beneficial nitrobacteria for crystal-clear water
- Ultra-Compact Design (85 x 97 x 190mm): The smallest HOB filter available; fits tank rims as narrow as necessary—almost invisible footprint
- Minimal Power Consumption (6W): Extremely energy-efficient; lowest power usage of any Boyu WF model—ideal for 24/7 operation with virtually no electricity cost
- Virtually Silent Operation: Excellent vibration dampening ensures nearly imperceptible noise—perfect for bedrooms, offices, and betta tanks where stress must be minimized
- Waterfall Aeration Design: Specially designed cascade flow naturally increases oxygen and promotes gentle CO₂ diffusion—ideal for nano planted tanks and sensitive betta fish
- Surface Oil Film Processor: Removes biofilm and surface contaminants automatically for improved water clarity
- Adjustable Flow Control: Fine-tune water circulation to suit delicate nano plants and betta fish temperament
- Easy Assembly & Quick Setup: Simple plug-and-play installation with pre-built components; no tools required
- Suitable for Fresh & Saltwater: Versatile for nano saltwater shrimp tanks and freshwater setups
- Filtering Area (25 sq. cm): Adequate media surface for small bioload nano systems
Perfect For: Betta tanks with plants (20-30L), nano aquascapes (15-25L), small desktop aquariums, shrimp breeding tanks, fry rearing tanks, and planted nano setups requiring gentle, silent filtration.
⚠️ Important Note: Due to low flow rate and small tank volume, this filter requires regular water changes (30-50% weekly) and careful stocking. Not recommended for heavily stocked tanks. May require manual water addition after power outages (see instructions below).

How to Use / Instructions
Installation & Setup:
- Verify power supply: AC 230V/115V, 50/60Hz, 6W
- Mount on side or back of nano/small aquarium edge
- Suitable for tank rims up to 12mm thickness
- Important: Keep inlet tube vertical and positioned as close to water surface as possible for optimal intake
- Critical: Maintain water level above filter motor at all times to ensure automatic priming. If water level drops below motor, filter will stop during power outages and will NOT restart automatically without manual water addition
- Fill filter chamber completely with water before powering on
- Insert vertical inlet tube into tank
- Power on and adjust flow rate using control knob
- Do not run the filter dry under any circumstances
Operation:
- Maximum flow rate: 150 L/h
- Recommended tank size: 15-25 liters (4-6 gallons); absolute maximum 30 liters with frequent water changes
- Filtering area: 25 sq. cm
- Dimensions: 85mm (L) x 97mm (W) x 190mm (H)
- Operating power: 6W
- Frequency: 50/60Hz
Filter Media Maintenance:
- Inspect mechanical filter (foam/sponge) weekly for debris
- Rinse mechanical media every 1-2 weeks in tank water only (never tap water—kills beneficial bacteria)
- Replace or rinse chemical media (activated carbon) monthly as needed
- Biochemical media requires minimal cleaning—only rinse if flow severely decreases
- Clean intake tube every 1-2 weeks; nano tanks clog faster due to small filter media area
- Keep spare filter media on hand—25 sq. cm is limited capacity
Water Chemistry & Tank Requirements:
- Waterfall design naturally increases oxygen—excellent for betta fish and oxygen-dependent nano species
- Ideal CO₂ diffusion for low-tech nano planted tanks
- Very gentle flow—perfect for delicate stem plants and carpeting species
- Requires weekly 30-50% water changes to maintain water quality in small volume
- Not suitable for heavily stocked nano tanks
- Ideal for: betta + plants, shrimp-only tanks, fry rearing
Critical Auto-Priming Issue:
⚠️ This model has a known limitation: Water drains from the filter chamber after power cuts due to lack of check valve. After power outages or electrical failures:
- Water level will drop below filter motor
- Auto-priming will NOT occur when power is restored
- You must manually add water to the filter chamber before filter restarts
- If not addressed, filter will remain non-functional until water is manually added
To Minimize This Issue:
- Keep water level consistently high (2-3cm above motor position)
- Use a backup power supply (battery backup) for temporary outages
- Check filter daily after any power interruption
- Have a small water jug nearby for quick refill after outages
- Consider upgrading to WF-2035+ if frequent power cuts occur in your area
Tank Compatibility:
- Best: Betta tanks with live plants (20-30L)
- Excellent: Nano aquascapes (15-25L), heavily planted
- Suitable: Shrimp breeding tanks, fry rearing tanks
- Not Recommended: Community tanks, heavily stocked tanks, tanks >30L
- Requires weekly maintenance and water changes
Troubleshooting:
- Filter stops after power outage: Manually add water to filter chamber until it reaches motor level; priming should restore function
- Reduced flow: Clean intake tube first, then mechanical sponge immediately
- Filter won't start at all: Check water is above motor; add water manually if needed
- Wobbling: Secure mounting bracket firmly to tank rim
- Excessive noise (unusual): Check if motor is properly seated in bracket
- Air bubbles in outlet: Normal during startup; should clear within 1-2 minutes
Important Safety Notes:
- Never touch electrical plug with wet hands
- Keep power cord away from water
- Unplug before any maintenance
- Not suitable for outdoor ponds
- GFCI outlet recommended
- Keep electrical components completely dry
- Keep out of reach of children
- Product has known priming issues—read priming section carefully
Recommended Maintenance Schedule:
- 2-3 times weekly: Check water level above motor
- Weekly: Inspect intake tube; perform 30-50% water change; check for debris
- Bi-weekly: Rinse mechanical sponge in tank water
- Monthly: Replace activated carbon; check biochemical media
- After any power outage: Manually add water to filter chamber if level below motor
Stocking Recommendations for This Filter:
- 20L betta tank: 1 betta + light plant load
- 25L shrimp-only: 10-15 shrimp (minimal bioload)
- 30L planted: 5-8 small fish maximum
- Not for community fish tanks or heavily stocked setups
